Install Flexible LED Lighting

17

LED lights provide illumination without the heat issues or energy consumption found in incandescent or halogen lights. You can install flexible LED lighting along the baseboard of a wall, by a doorway or windowsill using a few tools that are common to most households. Some supplies from a hardware or electronics store — the flexible LED lighting strip is available there as well –will also be needed

  1. Cut two inches in on the outer insulation from one end of the flexible LED lighting strip with the blade of a utility knife. Peel the outer insulation back from the wiring inside the strip. Separate the two wires at the end of the strip with your fingers. Strip a 1/2 inch of insulation from the end of each wire with a wire cutters.

  2. Strip a half inch of insulation from each of the two wires at each end of the electric cable with a wire cutters. Wind the exposed end of one wire at one end of the cable around one of the wires in the strip. Wind the exposed end of the other wire at the same end of the cable around the other wire in the strip. Wrap strips of electrical tape around each pair of wires to insulate them.

  3. Loosen the screws on the two contacts on the 12V adapter with a Phillips jeweler’s screwdriver. Wind one of the exposed ends of the wire from the free end of the cable around one of the screws. Wind the exposed end of the other wire on the cable around the other screw. Tighten the screws.

  4. Decide on the location where the flexible LED lighting strip will be installed, for example, around the bottom of a windowsill.

  5. Place the end of the flexible LED lighting strip that has not been wired on the underside of the windowsill at one end. Affix the strip to the underside of the windowsill with a strip of duct tape.

  6. Plug the 12V adapter’s power cord into the wall outlet to provide power to the flexible LED lighting strip, which will now light up
